Choosing Swing Set Attachments by Age

For toddlers, the swing set accessories we recommend first are the Full and Half Bucket Swings, with soft, weather-resistant rubber seats that little ones can't easily climb out of, and the Pirate's Boat Swing, which hangs on soft rope instead of chains and has a mesh basket sturdy enough for more than one child. Older kids head for the 3-Chain Tire Swing, which holds up to three riders, along with the Trapeze Bar, the Knotted Rope with Disc and the back-to-back Glider Swing. For a backyard obstacle course, the Ninja Readiness Kit and Launch Bar hang from the beam in any order.

Most swing attachments fit a standard swing beam, but structural playset accessories are built for specific Playground One lines. The Original, Deluxe, Supreme and Extreme Monkey Bars and Lower Enclosures follow the same naming as the sets, and the Sky Loft adds a raised lookout deck above the fort. What are the best accessories to add to a swing set?

It depends on who's playing. What swing set accessories are good for older kids and adults?

For bigger kids, the Trapeze Bar, Knotted Rope with Disc, Launch Bar and Ninja Readiness Kit add real upper-body challenge, and tire swings let several kids ride at once. The Sky Dreamer oval swing and the back-to-back Glider Swing are designed for shared rides, so friends and family can join in. Check the weight limit listed for each product before an adult climbs on.

What should you put under and around a swing set?

Skip bare grass and dirt. The CPSC's Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook recommends at least 9 inches of loose fill such as wood chips, engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch for equipment up to 8 feet high. Start with about 12 inches, since it compresses. Surfacing should extend 6 feet in all directions, and in front of and behind each swing it should reach twice the height of the swing beam. How do you maintain swing set accessories?

A quick check each season keeps everything safe. Routine maintenance means tightening bolts, looking for worn hangers or chains, and replacing any seat that's cracked or brittle.
