How Much Does an In-Ground Trampoline Cost to Install?
The trampoline installation cost for an in-ground setup usually adds $2,000 to $5,000 on top of the unit. That covers the dig, drainage, and labor to level and secure the frame.
Excavation drives the quotes most. Sandy, easy-to-dig ground keeps in-ground trampoline costs near the low end, while clay, rock, or a sloped yard pushes them up. Standard digging runs $2.50 to $15 per cubic yard, but most contractors carry a $500 to $800 job minimum, and rock that needs a jackhammer jumps to $50 to $200 per cubic yard. Southwest Ohio clay is heavy but diggable; buried limestone is the expensive surprise.
The retaining wall holds the pit open and varies the most. Block walls run $15 to $40 per square foot installed, and a 14ft round pit has roughly 44 feet of wall to build. Professional Installation Process for an In-Ground Trampoline
When planning a new trampoline installation, call 811 at least a few business days in advance and have utility locators mark the location of underground gas, water, and electrical lines. Excavating a three-foot pit into an unmarked service line may cause a gas leak or cut a power cord, which is genuinely dangerous.
Sizing
First, mark the trampoline’s footprint. The excavation should be wider at the top than at the bottom, creating a shallow bowl rather than a flat-bottomed box. This shape allows the jumping mat to extend downward beneath the jumper without making contact with the soil.
Excavation
Once the area is marked, excavation can begin. A 14-foot round pit typically requires approximately 10 to 14 cubic yards of soil to be removed. You'll need to redistribute that material elsewhere on the property or haul it away, which may add a few hundred dollars to the project cost. Site access is also an important consideration.
If equipment can pass through a side gate, a mini excavator can significantly reduce excavation time compared with manual digging or a wheelbarrow.
Retaining walls
After excavation, install a retaining wall around the pit perimeter. This step is important for maintaining the shape and stability of the excavation. Without adequate support, exposed soil can erode or slump into the pit, particularly after heavy rain. A properly installed retaining wall helps prevent soil erosion around the trampoline opening.
Water drainage
Address drainage before installing the trampoline frame. A gravel base is typically placed at the bottom of the pit, along with a perforated drainage pipe that directs water toward a lower area of the yard or a dry well. A basic drainage system may cost a few hundred dollars on a straightforward site, while more complex drainage requirements may cost several thousand dollars if water must be redirected over a greater distance or site conditions are challenging.
Frame installation
Finally, the team positions, levels, and anchors the frame before installing the mat and safety pads. The surrounding turf or landscaping is then repaired as needed. Most installs take one to three days, which is the main driver behind trampoline installation cost on the labor line.
Can You Just Bury a Regular Trampoline?
No, and this is the single most expensive mistake in backyard trampoline projects. An above-ground trampoline dropped into a hole will bounce badly, rust quickly and sit unusable within a couple of seasons.
Three things go wrong. Air has nowhere to escape when a jumper lands, so the mat hits a cushion of trapped air and loses its bounce. Water collects in a pit built without drainage and rots the mat and springs from below.
The third is the frame itself. Galvanized above-ground frames are built for open air, not constant soil contact, so corrosion sets in at the joints.
Purpose-built in-ground trampolines solve all three in the design. The frame is treated for ground contact, the pad system is vented to move air, and the manufacturer specifies the pit shape the mat needs. What Are the Downsides of In-Ground Trampolines?
In-ground trampolines look cleaner and sit lower, but they come with real trade-offs.
- Higher total cost. You pay twice, once for the trampoline and once for the groundwork, and the installation is usually the larger number.
- Permanent structure. Moving a sunken frame means reversing the entire excavation, so this is a ten-year decision about your yard layout.
- Drainage issues. Leaves, mulch and grass clippings work into the pit and can block the drain, and poor water management can increase the risk of damage around the pit or pooling. If possible, add a trampoline cover over the mat between uses to keep most of that debris out.
- Awkward net access. The enclosure poles sit at ground level, making entry and exit less natural than stepping up through a gate.
- Mowing and repairs. A hard edge prevents the mower deck from riding over it, and reaching springs or a mat means working at ground level rather than underneath the frame.
- Space suitability. High water tables, shallow bedrock, and steep grades can drive costs up or rule the project out, and nearby concrete, brick, or pool decking can complicate excavation and drainage routing.
Is an In-Ground Trampoline Worth It?
Yes, an in-ground trampoline can be a great investment for families who want a long-term backyard feature for their kids that integrates better with the landscaping.
Fall height is a major consideration. If a jumper goes over the edge of an in-ground trampoline, they step or fall onto the lawn rather than from the height of a raised frame. It also has no ladder for kids to climb unsupervised.
Sightlines are another advantage. A flush trampoline does not block the view across the yard from the kitchen window, making it easier to keep an eye on kids while they play.
